Pizza & Frends

Completed: Jan 2024
Location: Surat

This Italian pizza restaurant establishes its identity through a bold architectural gesture that begins at the street—a striking arched entrance clad entirely in gabion-filled stone creates an unmistakable landmark presence. The natural stone aggregate contained within the wire mesh framework evokes rustic Italian architecture while providing texture, thermal mass, and a tactile quality that contrasts sharply with the surrounding contemporary urban context.

The interior design embraces an industrial-rustic aesthetic that celebrates the pizza-making craft as central theater. The dramatic centerpiece is a copper-clad wood-fired pizza oven, its metallic dome catching and reflecting warm ambient light while anchoring the open kitchen as both functional equipment and sculptural focal point. Multiple ceiling treatments—woven cane panels, slatted wood grids, and smooth planes—define different zones while maintaining spatial continuity throughout the restaurant.

Gabion walls constructed with the same stone-filled wire cages as the exterior facade divide the dining space, creating intimate zones without sacrificing openness or light flow. These permeable partitions add substantial visual and acoustic texture while literally grounding the design in natural materials. The furniture selection features mid-century modern inspired wooden chairs with woven cane backs and light blue upholstered seats, providing comfort and a soft color accent against the predominantly neutral palette.
