21st Century Hospital

Completed: Oct 2023
Location: Surat

The façade project for this hospital near Surat railway station responds to an intensely dense and chaotic urban context with a gesture that is both calm and unmistakably civic. Inserted into a tight streetscape of shops, aging structures, and constant movement, the brick volume establishes a strong yet restrained presence. Its solid massing provides visual relief from the surrounding clutter, while the careful alignment with neighboring buildings allows it to sit confidently within the existing fabric rather than overpower it.

At the heart of the façade is a large bas-relief artwork etched directly into the brick surface, depicting a mother and child in a continuous, flowing line. This image transforms the building from a purely functional healthcare facility into a symbol of care, birth, and protection—ideas closely tied to the hospital’s purpose. The use of brick, a familiar and durable material, lends warmth and permanence, while the sculpted relief introduces softness and emotional depth. By day, the shadows animate the surface; by night, subtle lighting highlights the artwork, turning the façade into a quiet landmark amid the noise of traffic and commerce.

Functionally, the façade also acts as a buffer between the hospital’s interior and the busy street outside. The minimal openings and controlled entry reinforce privacy and hygiene, essential in a medical environment, while the recessed ground-level access creates a clear, dignified arrival sequence. In a location dominated by speed, congestion, and visual overload, the project stands out not through spectacle, but through restraint—using material, art, and proportion to communicate trust, stability, and compassion to the city it serves.
